Il Cinema Ritrovato – Day 4

Day 4 of the festival started of course with breakfast. It seems Herve and I are always there at the same time as he joined me again along this time with Josh Siegel and Dave Kehr, both of MOMA.

First film for me today was William Wellman’s pre-code NIGHT NURSE (1931) starring Joan Blondell, Barbara Stanwyck and a very early performance from Clarke Gable as a psycho-chauffeur suited and booted! It was a lot of fun.

I then made my way to the Lumiere and had coffee with Hans-Michael Bock and Mark Cosgrove.

Mark and I then attended a lunchtime debate which was headed up with Cannes director Thierry Fremaux, director Alice Rohrwacher and chaired by festival director Gian Luca Farinelli.

The debate was on film vs digital with Thierry in the digital corner and Alice fighting for 35mm! It was a strong debate with good points raised from both sides but I did smile when Alice said, “How can you call it the Cannes Film Festival when everything shown is not on film but digital. Should it not be the Cannes DCP Festival?”. A very bold statement from a very talented young director with just two films to her name (both superb by the way!) and a recent winner of the Cannes Grand Prix Award!

After the debate I headed to the Arlecchino Cinema for two of the Italian “episode” films. Today it was ACCADDE AL COMMISSARIATO (1954) and L’AMORE DIFFICILE (1962). These were both a real discovery and a joy to watch, with the first being incredibly funny and the second very alluring.

Next up in the same cinema was the recent restoration of DRAGON GATE INN (1967) by King Hu which recently screened at Cannes.

I sadly had to leave before the end in order to head back to the Lumiere and a screening of my “boss’s” film, SOCIALISM (2014). I worked as a researcher on the film and provided the majority of the film clips used in this essay film. Although Peter and I had seen the film two weeks earlier at Midnight Sun in Lapland, I was keen to see it again with this time a very different audience. The cinema was packed out with several critics and film writers attending. I spoke to a few after the screening and their response was positive so I look forward to reading some of the reviews.

Finally, to close the day, I had dinner with Alexander Payne and we shot the breeze about various movies we’d been watching and future projects.
